the mess that is my space

So I have been chained to my desk (not literally) as I try and finish all my commissions before Christmas, had a rather important/large piece to finish which I'm currently working on by candle light as my lamp as decided to blow! Don't worry I have a main light it's just rather dim and rubbish. It's been rather jectic running up to Christmas as I'm sure it is for all of you lovely lot, I have been chopping my time between my desk and visiting J out in the countryside as he had some sad news recently and being there for him is needed. 2015 hasn't been the best year ever but I'm trying my hardest to make December a busy and fun filled month as much as possible.

My new project is underway well and you guys seem to be loving the idea which is really encouraging, sorry if the blog at the moment looks a little sparse, I'm having a new side bar added and I really wish I could figure out how I want it to look, never been one for the minimal look, but we shall see.

Before I had a client meeting on Monday I ventured into The London Graphic Center as I knew I wanted to pick up some Copic Ciao markers and get my new project underway, my 25% off VIP couldn't be discounted on the pens but I brought them anyway, pains of being an illustrator the constant love and need for new stationary, I just love the markers, I work on Letraset paper so it has no bleed and they just make me super happy.

The studio space as been a little neglected, hello bare walls and no inspiration, sometimes I have to just get my head down and work so I think once we are in January I will be rearranging maybe moving so we shall see.

What I have discovered since becoming an Aunt

My beautiful Nephew turned a year old two weeks ago and he has been the best addition to the family, it's such a wonderful thing getting to see this tiny human grow and discover the world.

- Being an Auntie means doing fun stuff and making a mess without worrying too much.
- I have learned that I am definitely not ready to have one of my own.
- When they learn your name and come for cuddles its the best thing in the world
- An extra chocolate biscuit wont hurt
- Making the little lump laugh becomes my main mission when he's around
- Getting to hand them back when they're crying is the best feeling
- You become less squeamish around excrement
- Selfies are the best when they feature him
- cooing and ahhing when you aren't around him and in adult conversation sounds a tad odd.
- It's the best excuse to hunt down cute onesies, booties and toys.

So all in all being an Auntie is just the best thing thats happened to me in a long time.

time

Where is the time going, it has been a month since I shared the sad news about my mother passing and with that my old life, it's been an odd sensation obviously one I've never truly experienced before, don't get me wrong I have enjoyed moments within this time, hanging out with friends, laughing with my boyfriend and being around family. Moments my mum would of been proud of, me having my exhibition at Tatty Devine, watching Teddy take his first steps, his first tooth, me hitting my goal weight, and simple moments that we often over look.

It's been an absolutely horrendous time but with this I have built up a barrier of numbness, one that even if I wanted to shake off I couldn't, my brain seems to be protecting me fully from the upset and hurt that comes with the loss of such a wonderful human. I have nightmares, vivid ones of my mother, they're only nightmares as I am reliving that morning for the millionth time in my mind, I'm hoping my brain will slowly adapted it so I somehow forget, how wonderful would that be?! I haven't slept a full night since, can't wait for the day I have nice dreams again. I know they will come in time.

I didn't want this piece of writing to be sad, just a true reflection on moments in my life, it's been tough and will probably be like this for aslong as I can think, but I'm not sad, I'm oddly at peace with things in life. I have forgiven myself a lot more for certain things, I have learned that being fearless and being alone is a good way to be. I managed my exhibition with the help of the wonderful Jazmine alone, where once stood my mothers encouraging words now stands my memories and gut instinct, something I didn't think I truly had in me, something I don't think we have to truly rely on until nothing else is left, until we are forced to stand for ourselves and I am learning that it's ok to fuck up sometimes. I hated myself for a while because my diet slipped, I was proud of what I had achieved, my diet was one of those but what I realised is that it's OK to want to eat your feelings, sometimes a bit of comfort food is good for the soul.

I haven't given myself time to mourn, its hard when everything you see at home reminds you of that person, this all happened outside my bedroom door, so it feels like mourning for me hasn't been an option, well its odd I don't feel like I have needed I just feel by getting on with things is the best way I cope and coping is ok for a while I guess. I'm learning to live with a big old whole in my heart, that's it really, I am truly learning for once, how to be ok with myself and that she was right about everything. So life lately has been tough and hard but then again we are tough and hard with moments of light and happiness and we struggle to deal with things because we are human.

So in light of everything one thing I want my readers to know is that no matter how hard things seem, there is always a voice, strength a guide within you so you aren't unable to cope, it may feel like you can't or you find things tough and like me I have felt like there isn't a point to trying, there is, there is always a point, no matter how weak we are feeling, tomorrow is a new day and we bring our own hope and light were ever we go.

Top tips and advice for accepting yourself

Faux Leather jacket Zara | Jeans h&m | Boots office | baggy tee Zara - similar  | Antique Locket

"You bring just as much awesomeness as anyone who has graced this Earth"

I'm going to get all deep with you over here for Wednesday having a  mid week musing, after 15 years of hating what I look like finally decided to accept myself, yep there I said it. I was on the phone to my best mate when I blurted out to her "I love what I look like" after chatting about a recent failed relationship where I figured for once it wasn't that I wasn't good enough (surprisingly happens all the time with me hating on myself) to which my mate of eight years responded "I've been telling you this from day one!" our brains certainly does like to twist things doesn't it?!

I like what I see when I look in the mirror and for some reason the other day I felt braggy for saying that but confidence comes from within, honesty with yourself is important. I can see the person I was and who I wanted to be reflected in my face. I'm far from perfect and I am working towards little goals of happiness and fun, fully aware like everything else in life it isn't handed to you on a plate and I think even if it was I wouldn't take it willingly. I've never been a big fan of myself looks wise, I'm the first to put myself down when needed but I'm on a path of learning and new thinking, I'm from a large family and my sister being the girly girl, I just never figured myself as being attractive it's just like anything you learned you can unlearn it and start a new way of thinking.

Don't get me wrong I have odd moments where I wish my boobs were a little bigger (again) or I was taller but I figured there's no real fun in wanting things that aren't ever going to happen. We should really be happy and grateful for what we have been blessed with. There will always be someone out there slimmer, prettier and smarter then you, but at the end of the day they aren't you. there is only one of you and you bring just as much awesomeness as anyone who has graced this Earth. Don't water yourself down just because you don't think yourself worthy or good enough. Accept yourself, flaws and all.

Here are my top tips and advice for accepting yourself.

- Make a list of lovely things about you, cut them up (can be anything smallest to the biggest,) pop them in a jar and keep hold of them, when you start doubting yourself pull one out and read it aloud.
- Get out of your head and back into the moment.
- Buy yourself good fitting clothes, something that makes you feel sassy, hello new Zara Faux leather jacket for added sassiness.
- Be aware of your faults, but realise they are only part of you and you aren't a failure you're human.
-You cant please everyone all the time simple,
- Nurture your well being
- Give yourself a break
- You carry yourself with you everywhere look after yourself
- Don't be too tough on yourself but always strive to be better today then you was yesterday.

Life lately Looking to the future

It's September where did that come from?! This year has gone crazy fast and I feel that the months from May to August were over in a flash. Over here I am working away on Christmas ideas and stock, a lot of small business I know have had this organised and nailed down probably by March but I find juggling my freelance schedule to be my priority when it comes to my work ( well more recently) so my products and items have sadly had to take a back seat, sorry to everyone wanting illustrated goodies.

My clothes spending ban is still very much in full swing and its been way over a month since I took the vow to not buy anymore clothes for a while, It's done wonders for my bank account not sure if its that or my work load or busy schedule that have kept me at my desk for long hours avoiding shops, unless its to pick up fruit and veg?! Talking of fruit and Veg I have been on my new plant based diet for the last 12 days and I haven't yet passed away from lack of sugar, fizzy pop or snacks which is surprising haha,  I cancelled my gym membership as my work load has pilled up, there is only so much I can juggle. But I have had a few trial trips to the gym at the end of my road which is nice not having to jump on the train to go for a run, silly logic.

I have had a couple of wonderful opportunities land in my lap as of recent (I obviously worked hard for them), I'm a little panicky as I find September and October to be my most quiet months so I am embracing those things that have popped up in my mail box and feverishly hunting out new and exciting projects, which I have found to be the best way. Not resting constantly searching, painting and developing my style.

I have spent a good few hours updating my online portfolio with all my new work and clients which I am really excited about, and in a weekish time a big commission piece for London Fashion Week will be coming out which I am super excited about. So I have set myself a couple of fab work goals for the next Three months that include Magazine work, exhibition work and getting my work out there as much as possible so if you're looking for a fun illustrator then I'm deffo your girl! Also E-courses are being sorted as I speak, it's been sucha challenge but I'm so glad to get the ideas off the ground.

I'm so looking forward to Autumn its my all time favorite season, even though I didn't actually manage to get myself a tan this summer, tut tut or a holiday for that matter.  I'm going to embrace Autumn in all its orangy glory, plus it will be my little nephews first Birthday in November which is amazing and scary all rolled into one.

So top of my to-do list for September is to prioritse my work and having much needed breaks I can seriously go two weeks without a day off and not realise it, which is silliness and really not good for my health so embracing those new ideas and changes are very much needed me thinks. Have you got anything exciting planned?

Being single in your late twenties - dating in london

This week is just speeding away from me, I just don't know where the time is going, can I have an extra Sunday or an extra Tuesday  every week please!? This time next week I'll be turning Twenty Seven, how very scary. Over the last few months I've had mini conversations in my head, with the mother and with my group of girl mates about being single in your late twenties. If I told my seventeen year old self I would be (newlyish) single at twenty seven I would of probably laughed and then cried a little inside.

Don't get me wrong its probably not as bad as it sounds, I've had some great adventures in those years but when a lot of my close friends are paired off and pretty happy with their other half's which is fabulous, it does leave me feeling somewhat bewildered. For a very long time I chose to be single (three years to be precise) I wasn't fussed about finding a partner, but the older I'm getting (yes i know twenty seven isn't old) the more pressure I feel to fall in with the right guy, but finding him is somewhat impossible when your mates aren't single, you can't exactly hang out in a bar on your own, and lets face facts Tinder is just filled with confused men looking for hook ups.

Facebook seems to be steady stream of with friends getting engaged, married and having beautiful babies and I'm here painting and drinking my cups of tea (I do get out I promise) wondering what the hell am I doing wrong. Wrong probably isn't the word, I'm probably looking under the wrong kinda rocks or possibly the fact I freelance from home doesn't exactly give me the chance to bump into the office hottie!

Dating in London is tough there are so many men (and I'm sure some women are the same) out there that seem to be fixed on the "I'm not ready to settle down vibe," of the "I haven't quite got my shit together thing" In the last year and a half I decided to make a conscious effort to try and find a nice guy, people are either in two minds about this, "you go get them girl" kind of people or the more laid back "let love find you" types. Now I am a mix of the two and that's a very confusing place to be. I have been told dating in London is completely different to other parts of the country and now with the introduction of Tinder and other dating apps it seems finding lasting, meaningful relationships in such a fast pace city a struggle, with at the swipe of a digit you can find another girl to chat to.

When you're in your late twenties the pool that you find yourself bobbing about in has some what lost its ripples and its just you swimming about with what appears to be the guppy fish and that elusive clown fish that keeps darting in and out of the coral, I personally don't find it always sucha fun place to be. Believe me dating is fun, its great I have some hilarious stories and some cringey goings on. But gosh its hard to put yourself out there all the time. I should be less stressed at the prospect of being single again and embrace it, enjoying my time not spent cleaning nappies or halving bills.

So instead of worrying about what others think,  how they perceive me and feel I have to put myself out there I'm going to be all radical and just go with the flow, I'm going to enjoy my own company, get out more, dress in pretty clothes (for me) and concentrate on myself and making me feel capable to tackle anything alone, because at the end of the day that's what its all about being the best version of yourself. Lets enjoy what we have more and not what we don't or we wish we had, everyone's path is different and everything happens in time.

HOPE YOU'RE HAVING A WONDERFUL DAY.

getting out of London

It's been a while since, I just took a day trip just because I can. I have been tied to my desk for seven days straight completing work and working on my dream, I'll talk more about that another time. So we decided to jump in the car and head on over to Berkhamstead which is about thirty minutes drive from me maybe less. Lovely little town with a beaut of a cinema and some wonderful little shops.

We decided to book tickets to see the film song of the sea which for anyone like me who loves animated films this Irish folklore based film was spectacular, simple but delicate. Before we watched the film we had a little time to kill, and wandered down by the canal, ate a sausage roll, screw you diet I'm heart broken and then read a few books in Waterstones making the most of the fashion and art dept.

It's always nice to get out of the city and make the most of the surrounding areas, just wish I ad brought my sketchbook and watercolours!

HOPE YOU'RE HAVING A WONDERFUL WEEKEND.

coffee and Suede

Primark faux suede skirt | Office Boots | Anthropologie waterfall front jacket | zara Striped vest

My spending ban is in full swing over here at Illustrated Ella, so when the brother treated me to a latte at Half Cup I was a little excited as I have decided to cut the random coffee treats out of my life and Stripe tee buying as this little one has exciting plans for those spare couple of quid, its not going to break the bank, but it really all adds up. I savored the moment. Deciding to venture out of the studio after a solid five days drawing and painting and late nights was the best .

The brother invited me along to his first tattoo consultation and as an old tattoo connoisseur probably for the best he dragged me along. We chatted about tattoos, pain and what he should get done, he settled on a lovely ankle cuff design which is super exciting.

Talking of treats I posted over on my facebook about my spending ban on the day my sister asked me to go shopping with her and I fell in love with the Faux suede skirt that Primark are selling at the moment, I had been in search of one for months, so for a present and a surprise my sister snapped one up for me and I just love it, one of my key items at the moment.

A time to reflect

So we are already three days into August my Birthday month, Yay! But I am still feeling the weight of July on me and evidently in my to-do list, it's not all bad I promise,  towards the end of july it was a time for me to be creative, the gym took a back seat (I'm still going at least three times a week) and my bum stayed firmly on the chair at my desk while I drew up new work to show my ability in a variety of styles because you know what why the hell not, I have a grand plan that I am now working towards  and it just needs to be done, there is something I have recently figured out, i already kinda knew it, but there isn't a magic answer for success or happiness, would be fab if you could just go to a shop and buy it. But there's no one there in the morning telling you to get out of bed and on with work, or making you put the long ours in, its all you. Hard work, passion, hard work, self belief, encouragement, hard work, sweat, tears and you guessed it hard work. I have sadly spent the early part of August questioning my place as an artist, hence my twitter silence and needing a little break from a few forms of social media.

I found since I graduated, five whole years ago (I know ages ago right) that my production rate and self belief in my work has decreased, I found since I discovered the internet and social media the rate has gone hand in hand. Its a double edged sword. Instant place for inspiration, instant place for questioning yourself with a dash of self loathing. Not great for an artists mind, please don't get me wrong, it has been the best for sharing my work, clients, inspiration, hope and encouraging others. I did however have a dreadful thought the other day, that maybe my work does this to people, maybe my blog and drawings make other people question their ability at what they do, (insanely big headed I know) and I would hate to think no one thinks they're good enough.

I receive a handful of emails a day mainly from young girls asking me how to become an artist, illustrator or doodler,  saying their work isn't good enough, that they'll never be able to draw as good as me or other people they find inspiring, it does break my heart a little. Passion for something shouldn't be squashed because you don't think you're good enough. I was lucky between the ages of 5 and 20 that I had no real grasp on the internet, sharing work, we used it for school but we never had a computer at home, so I honed my craft without having to share it with the world, I don't ever in that time remember looking at a painting and think "oh god that's awful" I use to look at it and think, "You gave that a fair whack earlier, there is room for improvement, carry on girl" that's not big headers or me thinking i'm good that's me making it possible to keep going, if I don't love what I do no one else will.

When I grew up my art idols were Jacqueline Wilson, Van Gogh, Monet, Gustav Klimt, and all the art teachers I had ever encounters from the primary to secondary school. Majority of the artists were sadly no longer with us, so I stared at paintings and I drew,  a lot. We are talking from the moment I came in from school till bed time, I looked at books too dyslexic to read and believe me at the age of 8 when you feel inadequate and stupid (my coping mechanism) when I couldn't understand the words that I saw on the page I naturally began to analysis the paintings and aspire to one day go to art school and draw all day.

What I am trying to say is if you really want something that badly you'll find a way to learn, to gain the skills, my library card was my best friend, my cheap paint brushes and palette were holy to me.

Sometimes it's OK to loose our way and not know how to get back on our path, and by asking people who have paved theirs before you is the best kind of advice, they can't give you everything as they aren't you. Van Gogh died a penniless artist but what he put into this world to me is some of the best expressive heart felt work this world has ever seen. If he created something so wonderful and meaningful there is nothing stopping you from putting pen to paper and creating even if its just for yourself, (yes everyone says he's an artistic genius but do you think at the time that's what he thought?) put it's out in the world and you never know what it may evoke in others.

The way we see ourselves and how others see us, be it our size, personality or what we create are separate beings.

Don't put yourself down or compare what you do with others its so easy, just work, work on yourself, what you are putting out in the world and more importantly nourish yourself. Read a bloody book, keep notes, paint. Go outside and draw people, be amongst it all, sew your own clothes, see your Grandma, be kind to yourself. You aren't going to get discovered if you censor yourself, be happy, enjoy what you do. Get seen for being who you are and doing what you love, and more importantly develop a thick skin, not everyone is going to like what you do and that's ok, take encouragement from knowing people have opinions on your work, at least its evoking something and above all else never stop.

HOPE YOU'RE DOING GOOD.

Just a thought...

Breton tee Zara - similar  | Levi shorts - Similar | Vintage Belt

This week has been a tough old one, seen myself stressing over money, people and things more then I probably should or whats good for me. But it has to be done I suppose. I have decided that I really need to work harder and boost my Portfolio which I have been working on sorting today editing and scanning in new work alongside retouching old pieces. It's been great to go through old work and see how far I've come but where exactly I want to aim for, needing to push myself more is something I struggle with. Finding the motivation to work when you're a Freelancer is something I have been dealing with these past few weeks, especially when you have so much going on around you that's not so fun. I'm getting there and planning a lot of new projects, clients and filling my diary up with events and more time for myself which I think is key. I have found surrounding myself with creatives and spending time boosting the positive thoughts is a good way of staying on track. I often find myself comparing what I do with others always forgetting everyone is walking their own path, at different speeds and with different obstacles in their way. Social media has made it very easy too see the great side of things and often hiding the struggles and hard work that goes on behind closed doors.
So maybe being hard on ourselves is pretty much a waste of energy and we should be focusing our attention (I speak for myself) on putting positivity into our work and sharing good thoughts with others.

So for the week ahead I have set myself a few tasks, goals and thoughts to encourage self development and positivity.

- Work/live in the moment
- Create one piece of work for me
- Smile more.
- Organise time better
- Spend time with people who are positive
- Do not compare yourself
- Switch your phone off
- Doodle
- spend less on things I don't need
- Drink more tea that always helps

I am loving everything about today's work outfit, feel a little bit like Mr Smee from Peter Pan cross between festival Kate Moss, its a simple everyday look for me when I'm working, I rarely wear trousers when I'm at home, I have so many pairs of ripped levi shorts that I throw on and a simple tee. You can see I'm a little obsessed with stripes, so I no longer fight it and if I can find one for £3 in the Zara sale then I'm going to nab that bad boy regardless of having a million similar tees, I know it will be loved.

HOPE YOU'VE HAD A LOVELY DAY

read . wear . do

I have recently signed up to The Association of Illustrators and today my membership arrived along with Varoom! Magazine which I got stuck into, its lovely to read up on the latest news and whats going on in the world of illustration, totally geeky I know.

Its not everyday I receive such a thoughtful gifts as this twiggy necklace that I received from my friend Jaymie, Jaymie creates beautiful illustrated necklaces, collar clips, earrings inspired by fashion icons. I think this would work perfectly with my favorite Breton top and high waisted black trousers for that elegant look. Jaymie also runs a blog which is where she shares beautiful photos and illustrations have a little look!

So for my twenty sixth birthday I received a Tattoo machine, so I put it to good use the other day and gave myself a little anchor and a little heart locket, the heart locket was based around my Paris trip with Lyzi we wanted to get matching tattoos all the way back in 2012 and I've only just doodled it on me! Don't worry they're healing well and everything was clean and safe.

So what have you been reading, wearing and doing this week?

a sneak into my room.

Welcome to my room, I have been having a few lonely days, working away at my desk, staring at the four walls whilst I draw and paint. I do love to adorn my walls with lovely cards and letters from friends and loved one. I love collecting things for room that are colourful.  Can you tell I am slightly obsessed with tea cups?

This is just a little snapshot of the things keeping me company with in my little space, I am such a hoarder, but I wouldn't change, over load of pencils and pens, topped off with crazy amounts of notebooks.

I have a little girl crush on the model in the glasses and the awesome fringe, so i have printed out the photos to inspire me when i draw my tattooed ladies.

One of my favourite books by Joe Dunthorne good old Submarine, I am waiting on a massive order of books from amazon I am such a nerd, I do love to read.

my little book of food.

So i bet some of you had new years resolutions of eat healthy loose weight? I did, or should I say I do, I have decided its all well and good cutting out snacks and not drinking fizzy drink ( I'm a sucker for a pepsi max) that I will make all my meals super healthy, I have been eating healthily now since 31 st December, its not been as hard as I thought what after the cascade of chocolate at christmas, Remember this post I wrote about in August about eating healthy and my weight loss over the summer? Between the months of October and December I was at a really low point with myself and I decided if I wanted to eat rubbish I would because you know what it made me feel happier, well to be honest it really didn't my skin was the worst it has been ever and my energy levels were pretty non-exsistant, so I ate junk over christmas and I figured that it was basically my duty as a Masters in my house christmas is all about chocolates, twiglets and turkey and as of 2013 I will power through with the healthy lifestyle. The main word there being lifestyle, I figured the best way for me to do this ( as I am a visual thinker artist and all that) would be that i would think myself healthy sounds stupid but its totally working, think of myself in 6 months how i want to look, feel and be and thats what gets me through not bingeing on chocolate when I get in from work, or thinking that its too hard i want to eat rubbish,  instead eating some almonds and dried cranberries (totally my favourites) Its so much easier then I thought, i feel so much more in control and a lot happier it really is amazing what you can do if you set your mind to it.
To help me this year I have decided to make myself a little cook / healthy book filled with home-made recipes, for when I am feeling totally un-inspired, when i'm thinking i've had enough of the same food, because variety is indeed the spice of life and being healthy is so important, to add to this little book I discovered the amazing joy the baker the other day massive fan her food is awesome. I will be sharing with you, a few of my recipes and foody stuff as the weeks go on.
Have you made any little changes so far this year?

Loving you with my whole heart

Its been a beautiful day here in london, I totally made the most of the sun, I did a little work over the allotment and read a little of my book. I am feeling a little lost at the expanse of time I have off from work, don't get me wrong i am totally grateful for it but i'm not entirely sure where to start. I was talking to a friend the other night about time, work and being busy and i was thinking about the last time i was truly "free" from work and it must have been when I was at school. I graduated two years ago and since then I haven't had a holiday, i've gone from job to job. I think its about time i take a slower pace in life and really enjoy my surroundings rather then feeling guilty for putting my feet up for more then two seconds. So the suns appearance was truly needed for my soul today. I threw on my new french connection summer address and chilled out in the sun. I am so ready for my trip to Paris.  Today as a treat I made my favourite snack mashed bananas and cornflakes, it looks horrible but it is beautiful....you should try it!
